For most gamers out there, Street Fighter remains king of the fighters, with one of the largest rosters of insanely memorable and crazy combatants along with a great balance of easy to tough as nails combos, it’s simply a fantastic series.
I, in fact, include myself in this group, while I have a huge love for Killer Instinct and Marvel vs Capcom, the latter can’t exist without Street Fighter anyway, and KI just cant match the amount of content that Capcom delivers year after year (although lets not talk about on disc DLC)
Since its release some years ago, Street Fighter IV has been riding a wave of success, daring to go with a unique and fresh new art style that combines cel shading with a look of traditional Japanese paintings, it gave the series a kick it didn't necessarily need but was all the better for receiving. We’ve seen a whole host of DLC costumes as well as the release of Super Street Fighter IV (and of course Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition) which offered up a host of new characters and much needed gameplay tweaks but ready to kick of the new year, its time for Ultra Street Fighter IV.
Once more throwing in four new characters and boasting new features such as Red Focus Ring attack (Absorb damage with Red Focus, then unleash a powerful attack to turn the match around in your favour), Ultra Combo Double (2 Ultra Combo bars which allow you to use both your combos in a single match) as well as two new modes, Elimination (A team battle, in which the winner only gains a small amount of health for each victory) and Online Training (Hone your skills with anyone from around the world, practice together to become the best) its sounding good so far but whats it like?
Well, I was lucky enough to be invited down to the London preview event, on behalf of the XBLG, to soak in the atmosphere and play the game, which I can tell you was a blast to finally play!
Situated in the heart of Shoreditch, London, I walked into the venue and cautiously wandered down the cornet stairs into, what looked like, a scene from fight club. Luckily enough I was welcomed by a sea of gamers and consoles, with everyone fighting for their lives in heated battle.
Taking centre stage, literally on centre stage, was a fully hosted tournament to anyone who dared take their chances and what a sight it was to see each brave competitor throw everything they had into a match. After a few hours of some rather tense fights from amateurs and pros alike (Problem X put on quite a show himself) we were treated to a world exclusive trailer of the brand new Street Fighter move Assassins Fist.
While unfortunately this was the one thing I couldn't film, I can tell you that it looks pretty damn exciting. Written by and starring Joey Ansah (Akuma) and Christian Howard (Ken), who you may remember for creating the extremely popular YouTube short Street Fighter Legacy, the series is set to air exclusively on Machinima later this year.
All in all it was an exciting night and great to see so many Street Fighter fans getting together for a good old rumble! PERFECT!
Ultra Street Fighter IV is out sometime in June of this year as will be available as a full retail release, or as a simple update for those who already have their hands on Super Street Fighter IV.
