I would never call myself a ‘fan boy’ of any console. I love each equally, each has its own pros and cons and each has its own exclusives. I would say however, that I predominantly play the Xbox One when playing online with my friends, simply due to the fact we all share that console in common.
So when I got my hands on a PS4 finally, I quickly realised that I wasn't prepared for online battles and needed to go on the eternal search for a decent headset. Having played around with headsets from all different brands, I looked into what Turtle Beach had on offer considering the beautiful XO Seven had served me so well with my Xbox.
Thankfully, I found Turtle Beach have recently released the 400 Stealth series. The first wireless headset to hit Sonys next-gen console and was eager to give them a test drive.
Right from the word go, I was impressed. As you would expect, the 400 Stealth set is a sturdy build, that both looks great and feels great. Straight out of the box, you’ll find the 400 Stealth extremely easy to set up. With a USB receiver that plugs directly into your PS4/PS3, connect the supplied optical audio cable to the USB and back of your preferred playstation and hey presto, you're ready to go. It really is that simple.
As with previous head sets, the mic can be manoeuvred into any position you feel comfortable with and even removed at will. Constructed of a single, pliable metal rod, I had no issues moving it into my desired position, which is as far from my mouth as possible because I tend to shout. Alot.
If you’re with me on that problem and find yourself shouting every time you lose control of a capture point in Destiny, then you’ll be happy to know that the 400 Stealth offers mic monitoring. I was initially dubious that this would stop me shouting out during a heated skirmish, but was surprised at both what my voice sounded like to the wider world and that it kept me quiet. I had no more complaints from flat mates once I got these on the go, and with a range of up to 30 feet, your free to do cartwheels all over your games room. You know, because thats important! (just me?)
The headset itself is extremely comfortable, padded up to the nines and finished off with soft cotton ear cups and head band. Personally I prefer the cotton padding as it lets my overlay sweaty melon take some gasps of air, sure its not quite as luxurious to some but I wouldn't let this sway you in anyway. I felt extremely happy to be wearing these for long periods of time, with none of that head compression that some other headsets seem to punish you with.
Regardless of all the aesthetics, sound is key with all headsets and thankfully the 400 Stealth delivers a beautiful array of sounds to tickle those Chocleas. Boasting a set of 50mm Neodymium Speaker Drivers, the bass is deep and meaty while the mids and highs sing just as you would expect and despite the lack of Dolby 5.1 surround sound support, the stereo delivered is still pure quality. This clarity is something that transfers to in game chat, I was able to hear my friends as clear as a bell and have been told that the same can be said of the audio delivered from the 400 Stealth microphone.
Overall, the package that Turtle Beach have on offer here is simple irresistible! Superior sound quality as usual, along with serious comfort all while looking sharp and offering a cable free experience all at a reasonable price.
